Because of the long time scales for human transportation, it may first be more cost effective to send robotic missions to other stars (which could listen in for radio signals from planets).

We have already begun this process with the Pioneer and Voyager spacecraft which are leaving the solar system forever. These spacecraft carry plaques which give a coded message about where they came from and when they left.
